Meta description length: what actually matters to Google
There is no meta description length limit. Google says a description can be any length, but it truncates snippets as needed, usually to fit the device width. Accuracy matters more than length: Google builds most snippets from page content and uses your meta description only when it describes the page better for that query.
The rule: Write a meta description that accurately summarizes the page; expect Google to rewrite it

Why it matters
Google primarily builds snippets from page content and uses the meta description only when it describes the page more accurately for the query. There is no length limit, but snippets are truncated. Descriptions do not affect ranking, but a good one improves the snippet when used.
How to do it
- Write one unique description per important page that states what the reader gets
- Include specific facts like price, specs or dates rather than slogans
- Don't spend time on low-traffic templated pages; Google will generate snippets from content
Example
<meta name="description" content="Written by A.N. Author, Illustrated by V. Gogh, Price: $17.99, Length: 784 pages"> Questions
Why does Google rewrite my meta description?
Google primarily generates snippets from the page content itself. It shows your meta description only when it gives searchers a more accurate description of the page for their query, so different queries can produce different snippets for the same URL.
Do meta descriptions affect rankings?
No. Meta descriptions do not affect ranking. A good one improves the snippet when Google chooses to use it, which is why it is still worth writing for important pages.
What should a meta description include?
A short, accurate summary of what the reader gets, with specific facts such as author, publication date, price or manufacturer. Make it unique per page. Keyword lists make poor descriptions and are less likely to be shown.
How do I stop Google from showing a snippet?
Use the nosnippet robots meta tag to block the snippet entirely, max-snippet:[number] to cap its length, or the data-nosnippet attribute to hide specific parts of the page from snippets.
